About Bryant Austin

Bryant Austin is known for his life-size photographs of whales, emphasizing the inquisitive expressions of their eyes. A process that took twelve years to create fourteen life-size portraits, which now serves as a critical archive for future generations. Whether it is his work with whales or his most recent work with the sun, his photographs connect us to the infinite nature of the cosmos.

His body of work expresses an awareness that every photograph taken throughout history is a self-portrait of the cosmos. It is this sensation of profound connectedness that he seeks to capture in every photograph. His new work reveals the sun’s surface in vivid detail, as viewed through Earth’s ever-changing atmospheric states. Dramatic landscape elements anchor the experience to challenge our perceptions of reality and our place within an infinite void.

Following his father’s death in 2015, Bryant felt compelled to explore the oneness he felt with whales through other subjects. His journey led to a deeper connection to the cosmos and personal transcendence and shaped his belief that disconnect we experience – from one another, from nature, and the universe – is an illusion.
